I’ve been in the UK for 2 months now and it feels like just
last week I arrived! This experience has already surpassed any expectations I
could have thought to have. If anyone is curious what it’s like at this stage
the answer is that you become a part of the culture. I have found myself using
their phrasing when I speak and I use some of their words (“the loo”, “queue”,
“rubbish”, “bin”, “chuck”, “pudding”, etc.) My time here has been such a
blessing.
These last two weeks were rather eventful with the different
clubs and activities. Many of the kids that come on Monday afternoons or
Tuesday mornings have gotten to know me and come to play with me during club.
The first weekend of March was quite tiresome- but worth it. On Friday, I
attended the Women’s International Day of Prayer at a Catholic church in the
area in the morning. That evening we had youth club at New Life church and the
kids got to worship through the music and style that fits their generation a
little better. Right after that, Glen and I met up with our host families and
our friends Elsbeth and Horrace at our second Cehlieh experience. It was great
fun.

Saturday, I slept in to prepare for that evening. Saturday
night a group of us from the church participated in the YMCA Sleep Easy. This
event was meant to raise funds for the YMCA to help the homeless people of
Lincoln. The Lord blessed the evening with no rain or snow, so we only had to
defend ourselves from the cold. I wore 4 pairs of socks, 2 pairs of leggings under
jeans, 2 thermal long-sleeved shirts, 1 hooded jacket, 1 thick fleece, 2 pairs
of gloves, 2 long scarves, 1 hat, all in 2 sleeping bags. We slept outside
Lincoln cathedral. It was great to hang out with good friends and the fact that
it was at the cathedral made me feel more like a local. I felt like I wasn’t a
visitor or tourist anymore- I was a part of the community.
The following day I could really feel the lack of sleep I
got, but I appreciated the experience. I went to church and got to worship before
an afternoon of napping. It did take me a week to gain that night of sleep back
though. The week was filled with preparations for the “bible competition” for
the youth. They have been learning about Paul by studying the book of Acts for
over a month now. The prize at the end is a money voucher. The quiz was a
success I’d say, and certainly a learning experience for next year. The end of
the week was great because Glen’s parents came across the pond to visit! They
arrived in Lincoln Saturday afternoon and were able to get a quick city tour in
before that evening. It was great to see them and to get a bit of home through
their company. Now they are off to see as much of Europe as they can in a week.
I wish them luck J
That’s all I have for now, until next time!
Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you”
declares the Lord. “Plans to prosper and not to harm you, plans to give you
hope and a future.”
